Adventures in Asia

by Greg & Francie

Trip Overview

This is going to be a really boring post, but I feel the need to dispense some basic information about “The Trip”.

The Facts:

On January 7th, IN 3 DAYS, Greg & Francie leave Seattle for ONE WHOLE YEAR to travel around Asia!!!  (awww yeaaaah, boooyaaa, whazzzzupppp, etc. etc.)

Contact:  We will not have a cell phone.  The best way to contact us is through email or this blog.  We’ll be posting regularly whenever we’re in locations with internet cafes.

Travel Plan:  Our trip starts in Thailand but we have no firm itinerary.  So far we’ve established that we’ll be spending the first couple days in Bangkok adjusting to the new time zone and obtaining our Burma visas, then we’ll head south for 5-6 weeks on the beach.  Around Jan. 15th, we’ll meet up with fellow adventurers Simon & Justine in Railay, and Feb. 6th we rendezvous with fellow adventurer extrordinaire Jen in Trang province.  Soon thereafter we’ll head to northern Thailand and visit Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, where wildlife, hiking, and jungle adventure opportunities abound!!!

As for the rest of the year, here is our best guess at where we will be and when:

March                   Burma (Mandalay, Yangon, Bagan, Ngapali Beach)
April and May      Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Xian etc.
June                     Inner China and Tibet (maybe Nepal)
July – Aug            Indonesia (Flores, Komodo, Java, Bali–still very tentative)
Aug -Nov              Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and maybe back to Thailand
Dec – Jan              India (Delhli, Goa, Rajasthan, Jaipur, Calcutta)
February ’08       Italy, Montenegro?–than back to Seattle…

Budget:  $20 a day (each).

Luggage:  1 VERY LARGE backpack each.  Content breakdown is 50% pharmaceutical supplies (for any possible symptom or disease), 40% electronics & camera equipment, 10% living essentials such as clothing and personal hygeine products.  Ok, I’m exaggerating here, but we do have a freaking f@#$load of medical supplies!

Entertainment, aka wtf are greg and i going to do on all those 18 hour bus rides and at night in places where there is no electricity:  We have chemistry and physics fact cards!  I am really excited about these.  I found them at Metzger maps.  We also have a travel backgammon game, a deck of cards, uno, mad libs, crossword puzzle book, and about 20 audio books.  Double sweet.  Oh, and a travel candle of course so we can view these things at night (thanks Pepo Park!).

Volunteer Work:   We’re trying to organize some travel breaks to do volunteer work.  Possibilies include teaching english in China, working at a burmese refugee camp in Thailand, and helping out the vets at an animal hospital in Koh Pha Ngan (this last option would be for me, not for greg ;-).

  3. I find that I don’t need much entertainment on the long bus rides and trains. Except for nighttime rides, when I read a book, there’s plenty to entertain me by just looking out the window, listening to the local sounds, and acting as the entertainment for the locals on the bus/train. If I were looking to save space, this is where I’d cut.
Having said that, it sounds like those flash cards and other games could double as excellent gifts!
