Breaking News: We eloped!

In an effort to boost our blog readership Francie and I have gotten married in Bangkok!  Ok, ok, so it didn’t really have anything to do with the blog–here is a picture of us holding the marriage certificate.

We have actually been planning this for some time but the process, which is recognized by the U.S. government, has taken longer than we anticipated.

After going to the US Embassy and swearing that we had not been previously married, having that document translated into Thai, getting registered at the Thai legalization center we finally got to the last step–the marrige certificate.  At that office we found that we were suppose to bring a translator and witness.  This lady, her kids, and her manager took mercy on us–I believe these two kids were the witnesses 😉

What next?  We are going to check in to the extremely posh Banyan Tree Hotel in Bangkok for five nights of spa time, swimming in the rooftop pool, drinking at the bar, shopping, and watching Spiderman at the iMax.

To Randy, Weezie, Olivier, Tamara, Kim and Shawn:  We beat you to the punch!  Francie and I both agree that it is truly a bizarre thing to call your parents and say “We just got married in Thailand”.

On May 13th we fly to the Yunnan province of China where we will travel to Dali and take several weeks of Mandarin lessons.

This is us during our Limo, oh wait, I mean taxi ride to the “ceremony”.

calling your parents to say “we just got married in Thailand” is certainly much, much cooler than calling from Vegas…

  5. Wonderful! Congratulations! Quite a story to tell the future generations 🙂
A few posts back, I noticed a ring on Greg’s left hand and I was wondering if it had any significance. I wanted to ask, but I thought it wouldn’t be polite. Now, would you please put my curiosity to rest: was it some sort of engagement ring?

  13. Congrats! I’m sure your parents were happy when they found out that you married each other in Thailand (rather than some random people) and that you got married, not some other scary thing you could do in Thailand (like land in jail).

    When’s the party? 🙂

  14. Roxana, they were more like wedding rings. We purchased them in Chiang Mai a couple of months ago at this upscale shop we like a lot there. I like my ring a lot it is white gold with a band of rosewood set in the middle of it.

  28. My name is Stephanie and I work for It is a new website all about, you guessed it, eloping that is going to be up and running this fall. I am currently gathering some stories about couple who’ve eloped so they can share all their details and thoughts with others in our “Share Your Story” section.
If you are interested, I have attached a word doc for you to fill out. You can just send it back to me rather than the address that is in the doc. That’s the head honchos address and I have to edit the stories before I forward them on to her.
I hope you are interested and I would love to hear from you soon! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you might have.
    Thank you for your time,
PS – I couldn’t attach the doc but if you are interested please feel free to contact me so I can get the document to be filled out to you ASAP. Thank you again!
