Adventures in Asia

All the Bars of Asia (V2)

In early April I made a list of all the bars that Francie and I had been to on the trip.  Well, now its June and we have been to even more bars so I thought I would post a Top 10 list.  We will see how the list changes over the coming months.

  1. Kalaw, MyanmarHi Snack & Drink.  This is my favorite bar!  This small bar is located in the mountain town of Kalaw.  The locals are absolutely wonderful and, at any time, someone will break out a guitar and the whole bar will break out singing–but not in a lame way…in a great way.  BTW, you will be encouraged to participate.
  2. Koh Ngai Villa, ThailandTiki Bar next to the bungalows.  Great pina coladas with fresh fruit.  Neat atmosphere with interesting staff.  Have a few drinks and listen to the tide turn.
  3. Greg

  4. Hong Kong, ChinaAqua Spirit.  This bar is located at the top of a skyscraper in Kowloon.  Great gin martinis, mojitios and snacks.  The view of Hong Kong Island is stunning at sunset.  The place is almost a little to uppity for my tastes but it slides under my ‘Annoying Radar’.
  5. P1050266

  6. Dali, ChinaCafe de Jack.  This cafe/bar/resturant is truly a wonderful place with a young and fun staff.  You can have a grilled cheese and Jack on the rocks or, in winter, their ‘Lemon tea with Brandy’ will take the chill out.  I have no idea why this place is not in the new Lonely Planet but you will find it down the street from Jim’s Tibetian Guesthouse.
  7. P1040626

  8. Luang Prabang, Laos–The Hive Bar.  Happy hour is 2:1 here between 5-9pm.  Feels upscale!  Great drinks.
  9. Hive

  10. Vientiane, Laos–The Chicago Bar.  Quiet bar with nice drinks.  Slightly dark with reddish lights.  They let you select movies to watch upstairs. I was propositioned by a woman in the bathroom.
  11. Chiang Mai, Thailand–The Drunken Flower.  Expat bar with great mojitos and a cool dog named charcoal.
  12. Chiang Rai, Thailand–TeePee Bar.  Nice ambience.  Cheap(er) drinks.  I liked the decorations and the rooftop.
  13. Koh Phi Phi, Thailand–The Sunflower Bar.  Rebuilt after the tsunami, made to look like little shipping vessels.  But, hey guys, turn down the freakin music sometimes!
  14. Bangkok, ThailandStreet bar on Soi Rambuttri.  This place is located at the turn of the L shaped street that wraps around a walled Wat.  It is really just a stall but the staff is nice and you can watch people stroll by.  If you get to the Merry V Guesthouse you have gone too far!

Runners up

Chiang Mai, ThailandLa Villa Pizzeria.  Technically, an eating establishment with drinks but the Gin and Tonics were too good to go unnoted.

Koh Lanta, ThailandBeach bar by Koh Lanta Palm Bungalows.  The whole place glows red at night and is laid back during the day.

F & J at the beach cafe

Bangkok, ThailandVertigo.  At the top of the Banyan Tree hotel this open air bar look out over the whole city!
