Beijing Olympics Construction

Today was a very clear day so Francie and I decided to head out to the site of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It is still about a year away but we had heard that construction was very far along and we weren’t disappointed.

This is the Olympic Stadium (also called the National Stadium) which was architected by Herzog & de Meuron. The outside structure is completed and it looks really, really rad.

We believe that the very cool building next to the Olympic Stadium is for Aquatics.

Here are some other buildings at the main Olympic site including a black stone structure with interesting windows.

Let me tell you-the Chinese are Pumped and very proud that they are hosting the games. Francie told me she had read that, because of the very bad reputation of Chinese toilets, they were required to build ‘5 star’ bathrooms AND that visitors had to be a five minute walk from one of these toilets at all times. I don’t know if this is true (because you can’t trust Francie) but there are now a LOT of public toilets all around. I won’t be researching this topic further. 🙂

Final rumor is that the only way to get remaining tickets for the opening ceremony is on the black market and they are already going for 50,000 RMB. If true, that means they are being sold for 6,666 USD.

Oh yeah, one more thing. The Bejing Olympic mascots are cool too.

  1. Yes, the mascots are awesome! Of course I am expecting if something were to go wrong at the olympics that they all unite and form some giant robot and restore order.
